Every year on September 9, Internationl FASD Awareness Day is observed in countries, states, provinces, and towns all around the world. Proclamations are issued, words of encouragment are spoken, and the public is educated. Bells ring out at 9:09 a.m. in every time zone from Alaska to New Zealand, while people gather at events designed to raise awarenss about the dangers of drinking during pregnancy and the plight of individuals and families who struggle with FASD.
The first FASD Awareness Day was observed on 9/9/99. Every year since, awareness about FASD is raised on the ninth day of the ninth month so that the world will remember that during the nine months of pregnancy a woman should abstain from alcohol. FASD is 100 percent preventable.
